If you knowingly choose to brush the bugs out of your expired jiffy mix, that's your choice. When you knowingly give food to what is often an over-burdened volunteer-run charity that isn't capable of checking the expiry date or FDA recall of every last donation, you are putting the onus on the marginalized person or family dealing with poverty, homelessness, to realize you've given them the "option" of eating expired food. If they don't, then the only person who knew said food risked missed work and a trip to the ER is you. Maybe you'd be okay with bedbug riddled sheets but is it ethical to force someone to decide on the spot if they feel the same? You can dig through a garbage can whenever you want - presumably one goes to a food bank with hopes of better quality than that.

And to be blunt, there's no dearth of ragged clothes and linen. Giving so someone else can throw it in the trash for you.

I say this as someone who works at a nonprofit: the attitude “someone who has nothing will be grateful for anything” is harmful and dehumanizing when it’s used to justify donating something ripped, stained, or expired to someone less fortunate.

Homeless people deserve clothing with good structural integrity. Victims of house fires deserve linens that are free of stains. No one should have to eat expired food. It’s disrespectful to give people scraps when they’re already hurting.

Please, out of respect for your fellow humans, check the dates on your food donations before you drop them off.

Dude it is SO FUN and EXCITING to see a reoccurring reader. If you've commented a handful of times on an author's work, I guarantee that they recognize you. You can't imagine how many times I've excitedly informed my friends "the person with the funny cat image commented!" "- anon is back!!!!" and the friends've recognized who I was talking about because I talk about my commenters so often LOL. We love you all!!!

I'm seeing a lot of "ugh, so we can't even criticize fic authors anymore?" posts popping up on here and the ao3 subreddit and I just want to say, for the record: No one's saying you can't criticize (fanfic) authors publicly. They're saying it's rude and antithetical to positive fandom experience. And, yes there's a difference.

If this website was a conference and I had just spent a whole afternoon listening to a presentation on [unpopular fic trope] and after that was done, I got up on stage and very publicly told the audience that [unpopular fic trope] was illogical and anyone who writes it is woefully misinformed and should be banned from writing [relevant character], that would in fact be a dick move.

"But the canon character would never--" it doesn't matter. You're shouting down the hall at the person who just happily did a whole seminar on their OOC version of that character. "But I don't like that the author chose to make them--" good, you're well-acquainted with your likes and dislikes, time to find another fic.

We all run into fics and interpretations we don't like. But there's a huge difference between loudly talking about it on Tumblr where the author can see it, and just venting in a private discord or other group. Also, gentle reminder that this is a hobby for most writers and something they do purely because they enjoy it. Stop being massive dicks just because you feel entitled to a certain flavor of fanfiction you will probably be chasing until the Reformation of Krypton.

I've been posting a lot less overall, this isn't intentional, just the consequences of both trying to implement healthier changes to my daily routine for the sake of my new medication, as well as coming out of a busy holiday season just to get bitch slapped by a bunch of life shit and routine changes that will take some time to fully move past / adjust to. Buuut some pretty cool shit's happened too! I'll surely be giving a more in-depth life update this week now that I have the time to do so with this episode completed.
